Bardia National Park

The Bardia National Park is spread over 968 sq. km. and located in the western Nepal Terai. It is easily the largest and least disturbed wilderness spread in the terai and is predominantly sal forest sprinkled with tall grasslands. It is bounded on the north by the Churia Hills and is skirted on the west by the Geruwa River. It is here that your chances of spotting a tiger in Nepal are the highest. Other animals include the rhinoceros, swamp deer, leopard, jungle cats, blue bulls, sloth bear, barking deer, and languor. There are a few wild elephants and some of the males are considered the largest in Asia.

The Geruwa River that rushes in through a break in the hill range, is home to the famous masher game fish, gharial, marsh mugger crocodiles and the freshwater Gangetic dolphins. The park also has cobras, kraits and pythons.

The park boasts more than 250 species of birds, including the endangered Bengal florica, Sarus crane and many species of geese, duck and parakeets.

When to visit?

The best time to visit Royal Bardia National Park is from October through June

How to get there
By surface Royal Bardia National Park can be reached by direct bus departing every afternoon from Kathmandu, Pokhara and Royal Chitwan National Park.
Buses reach at Ambassa, the turn off for the Park, at approximately 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Forest Hideaway Hotel & Cottage is 13 k.m. from Ambassa. You will be received at Ambassa by our staff, and transferred to the hotel.
By fight: Flights are available daily from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Upon your arrival at Nepalgunj Airport, you will be transferred to the resort by Jeep, which takes 2.5 hours from the airport.

What to bring?
Binoculars, Flashlight, A jacket or sweater from November through February. Lightest clothing with sunglasses and hats from April onwards. Pants should be worn during elephant rides. Bright colors such as red and white should be avoided since those colors have been known to upset the rhinos. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Please carry only the bare necessities but not jewelers and valuable items. During the warmer months swimming suits are recommended.
