MANI  RIMDU FESTIVAL 2008

The most important festival in Tengboche is called the Mani Rimdu. It consists of nine days of ceremonies and meditation (Drupchen). This is concluded by a special blessing ceremony given by Tengboche Rinpoche to the public and the world renowned Mask Dances performed by the monks at Tengboche Monastery.

The following are the approximate dates of Mani Rimdu events this year based on the  Tibetan lunar calendar.

2 Nov. 2008: Preparations including making the sand Mandala and Tormas (symbolic offerings made of  coloured butter and barley flour)

6 Nov. 2008: Drupchen ceremonies start and continue uninterrupted for 8 days.

13 Nov. 2008::  Monks practice dancing without masks

14 Nov. 2008:: Giving the blessing to the general public (Wang)

15 Nov. 2008: Famous Mask Dances preformed by the monks in a special day long ceremony.  Afterwards the Sherpa community sing and dance the whole night long.

16 Nov. 2008:: Concluding Fire Puja.

Day to day Itinerary:
Nov. 08, 2008 Day 01 Your arrival to Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), you will be met by our Airport Representative, and transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel, inclusive of breakfast.
Nov. 09, 2008 Day 02 Full day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valley ( Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath, Swayambhu, and Kathmandu durbar square). Overnight at hotel, inclusive of breakfast.
Nov. 10, 2008 Day 03
Today early in the morning, we drive about 15 minutes to Tribhuwan International Airport. After 30 minutes scenic flight to Lukla (2804 mtrs.), we begin our trek to Phakding (2610 mtrs.) - 3 hours easy walking. Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3535 mtrs.). Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.
Nov. 12, 2008 Day 05
Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar
This is a day for an acclimatization. We have a fine walk around the valley to adjust with thin air. Namche Bazaar is known as the gateway of the Everest. We will take you to a museum too on the same day. There you can see the traditional custom of Sherpa peoples. Besides, a fine view of the Everest and other mountains can be overviewed from this place. Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Trek to Tengboche (3850m).

Trek to Everest Base camp (5400 mtrs.) and return to Ghorakshep. Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Day 13
Hiking to Kalapathar, then trek back to Pheriche
The day starts with a hike up to Kalapathar (5545 mtrs.), an excellent viewpoint to observe the Mount. Everest and innumerable spectacular mountains views. Then trek back to Pheriche (4280m). Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Trek to Khumjung Village (3753 mtrs.). Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Day 15
Trek to Phakding (2610 mtrs.). Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Day 16
Trek to Lukla. Overnight at tented camp, inclusive of full board meal.

Morning flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla. Overnight at hotel, inclusive of breakfast.
Nov. 25, 2008 Day 18 Leisure day in Kathmandu (it's also spare day incase of bad weather in Lukla). Overnight at hotel, inclusive of breakfast.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY OUR CUSTOMERS

* What type of shape do I need to be in?
This trek is suitable for average people who are moderately fit, thus no previous experience is required. To get condition for the trek, some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, hiking is recommended before you embark on journey. Person suffering from pre-existing diseases must seek medical advice before considering the trek. Whilst on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort before being fully acclimatized.

* Do we need any mountaineering experience?
No mountaineering experience is required as long as you're in your sound physical shape & have a sense of adventure will enjoy this trek.

* Is there any dangers that occur on these trips (robbery, kidnappings, etc...) due to Maoist uprising or is it a safe experience?
Nepal is absolutely safe country to travel. We do take every precaution to ensure the comfort and safety of the trekkers. In regards to political stress, everything has returned to normalcy lately after government - Maoist truce and Maoist party recently joint political mainstream after historical peace accord signed by both parties.

* How long have you been in business?
We have been serving in this field for over a decade and are trustable and government registered trekking agency.

Do you use yaks on the trek or do we carry all of our own gear?
Whilst on the trek, our porter will take care of your luggage. All you need to carry is your small day bag for your personal belongings like camera, water bottle etc only.

*What is the food like in the Guesthouses?
Regarding food, you will have choice from menu. Freshly cooked food is served at all times (western, continental and Nepali meals are available in all places).

*How much should I plan on spending for each meal not included in Kathmandu?
In Kathmandu, you can allocate US$ 08 - 10 for a lunch / dinner.

*Do you know about how many total miles the trek is?
Total distance of the entire trek is about 75 miles.

*If we arrived in Kathmandu a day early would you arrange to pick us up from the airport?
Yes, we would organize airport pick up even if you arrive a day earlier.

*What hotel do we stay at in Kathmandu? Do you know how much an extra night in the hotel would cost?
Usually we use hotel de l’ Annapurna or hotel Shanker in Kathmandu. For additional night, extra US$ 80.00 per night / per double room is charged which is inclusive of breakfast and all taxes.

*What opportunities will we have to shower along the trek if any?
In major places (Namche Bazar, Lukla), we arrange room with hot shower. And in rest of the places, hotel water in bucket will be provided for shower; it would cost you extra about USD 3-4 per shower.

*Will there be opportunities to charge camera batteries along the trek?
Yes, you can charge batteries along the trek (per hour USD 2-3 for charging).

*Once we make the deposit can we get it back within a certain period of time if something happened?
As per the company policy, 20% initial deposit is required to book your seat which is non refundable. Please see Booking Terms and Conditions for more details.
